About This Section

Entrez Gene summary for ADAM33:
This gene encodes a member of the ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain) family. Members of this family are
membrane-anchored proteins structurally related to snake venom disintegrins, and have been implicated in a variety of
biological processes involving cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, including fertilization, muscle development,
and neurogenesis. This protein is a type I transmembrane protein implicated in asthma and bronchial
hyperresponsiveness. Alternative splicing of this gene results in two transcript variants encoding different isoforms.

  • Genetic variations in ADAM33 are associated with susceptibility to asthma (ASTHMA) [MIM:600807]. The most
  • common chronic disease affecting children and young adults. It is a complex genetic disorder with a heterogeneous
phenotype, largely attributed to the interactions among many genes and between these genes and the environment. It is
characterized by recurrent attacks of paroxysmal dyspnea, with weezing due to spasmodic contraction of the bronchi
