About This Section
| Entrez Gene summary for GOLGA5: The Golgi apparatus, which participates in glycosylation and transport of proteins and lipids in the secretory pathway, consists of a series of stacked cisternae (flattened membrane sacs). Interactions between the Golgi and microtubulesare thought to be important for the reorganization of the Golgi after it fragments during mitosis. This gene encodesone of the golgins, a family of proteins localized to the Golgi. This protein is a coiled-coil membrane protein thathas been postulated to play a role in vesicle tethering and docking. Translocations involving this gene and the retproto-oncogene have been found in tumor tissues; the chimeric sequences have been designated RET-II and PTC5.(provided by RefSeq) UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: GOGA5_HUMAN, Q8TBA6Function: Involved in maintaining Golgi structure. Stimulates the formation of Golgi stacks and ribbons. Involved inintra-Golgi retrograde transport Gene Wiki entry for GOLGA5 |

GOLGA5 for disorders About GeneDecksing
OMIM: 606918 disorders: 188550 UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: GOGA5_HUMAN, Q8TBA6
Defects in GOLGA5 are a cause of thyroid papillary carcinoma (TPC) [MIM:188550]. TPC is a common tumor of thethyroid that typically arises as an irregular, solid or cystic mass from otherwise normal thyroid tissue. Papillarycarcinomas are malignant neoplasm characterized by the formation of numerous, irregular, finger-like projections offibrous stroma that is covered with a surface layer of neoplastic epithelial cells. Note=A chromosomal aberrationinvolving GOLGA5 is found in thyroid papillary carcinomas. Translocation t(10;14)(q11;q32) with RET. The translocationgenerates the RET/GOLGA5 (PTC5) oncogene which was found in 2 cases of PACT in children exposed to radioactive falloutafter Chernobyl
