About This Section
| Entrez Gene summary for KCNN3: Action potentials in vertebrate neurons are followed by an afterhyperpolarization (AHP) that may persist for severalseconds and may have profound consequences for the firing pattern of the neuron. Each component of the AHP iskinetically distinct and is mediated by different calcium-activated potassium channels. The protein encoded by thisgene is activated before membrane hyperpolarization and is thought to regulate neuronal excitability by contributingto the slow component of synaptic AHP. The encoded protein is an integral membrane protein that forms avoltage-independent calcium-activated channel with three other calmodulin-binding subunits. This gene contains two CAGrepeat regions in the coding sequence. It was thought that expansion of one or both of these repeats could lead to anincreased susceptibility to schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, but studies indicate that this is probably not thecase. This gene is a member of the KCNN family of potassium channel genes. Two transcript variants encoding twodifferent isoforms have been found for this gene. One of the variants lacks the CAG repeat regions. (provided byRefSeq) UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: KCNN3_HUMAN, Q9UGI6Function: Forms a voltage-independent potassium channel activated by intracellular calcium. Activation is followed bymembrane hyperpolarization. Thought to regulate neuronal excitability by contributing to the slow component ofsynaptic afterhyperpolarization. The channel is blocked by apamin
summary
for KCNN3: Ca2+-activated potassium channels (KCa) are a group of 6/7-TM ion channels that selectively transport K+ ions across biological membranes. They are broadly classified into three subtypes, SK, IK and BK channels, based on their conductance (small, intermediate and big conductance respectively). The small conductance KCa channels (KCa2.1, 2.2 and 2.3, also known as SK1, SK2 and SK3 respectively) and the intermediate conductance KCa channel (KCa3.1, also known as SK4) are voltage-insensitive and are activated by Ca2+-calmodulin. Both play important roles in many processes involving Ca2+-dependent signalling in both electrically excitable and non-excitable cells.
