About This Section
| Entrez Gene summary for SOD2: This gene is a member of the iron/manganese superoxide dismutase family. It encodes a mitochondrial protein that formsa homotetramer and binds one manganese ion per subunit. This protein binds to the superoxide byproducts of oxidativephosphorylation and converts them to hydrogen peroxide and diatomic oxygen. Mutations in this gene have beenassociated with idiopathic cardiomyopathy (IDC), premature aging, sporadic motor neuron disease, and cancer. Alternatetranscriptional splice variants, encoding different isoforms, have been characterized. (provided by RefSeq) UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: SODM_HUMAN, P04179Function: Destroys radicals which are normally produced within the cells and which are toxic to biological systems Gene Wiki entry for SOD2 |

SOD2 for disorders About GeneDecksing
OMIM: 147460 disorders: 612634 UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: SODM_HUMAN, P04179
Genetic variation in SOD2 is associated with susceptibility to microvascular complications of diabetes type 6(MVCD6) [MIM:612634]. These are pathological conditions that develop in numerous tissues and organs as a consequenceof diabetes mellitus. They include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy leading to end-stage renal disease, anddiabetic neuropathy. Diabetic retinopathy remains the major cause of new-onset blindness among diabetic adults. It ischaracterized by vascular permeability and increased tissue ischemia and angiogenesis
